Waterjet cutting machines use a high-pressure stream of water, which is then converted to velocity via a jewel orifice, which then creates a stream as fine as human hair.
When using abrasive cutting techniques, garnet, the abrasive material is introduced into the stream to increase pressure, resulting in a cutting velocity that is much faster. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods; examples of such materials include plastic and aluminium.
